What started out as a simple Facebook post grew into something bigger than I could ever have anticipated. I am completely, utterly, 110% overwhelmed by the kindness and unreasonable generosity that has been shown to myself and my students (If you have no idea what I’m talking about, scroll to the very bottom of this post for an explanation).
This post is VERY overdue. I had students write thank you letters the first week of school, and we just finished week 7. I’ve sent out most of the thank you letters (apologies to those who haven’t gotten one yet), and in the thank you letters, I promised a blog post with a compilation of thank you letters from all of the students. That clearly has not happened yet. But finally, here it is. A very long, overdue thank you.
I cannot convey to you how much joy I got on the first day of school, telling each class about the books that were donated for my classroom library. I won’t lie to you. Not all of them were impressed. They are, after all, teenagers. But despite apathy from a few, which will hopefully dissipate as time goes on, there was an overall sense of awe and gratitude from the students. And I think these pictures speak for themselves. This is a comparison of how many books I started with, and how many books are currently left on my shelf after over 100 kids have borrowed books already.
When I presented the library to each group of students, I told them why I started the project. I told them it was because I believed they matter, and they are worth investing in. I told them that everyone who contributed to the classroom library contributed as a way to show that they too think that each of them matter, and that they are worth investing in. On the inside cover of each book, I wrote who donated the book, and either a specific message from the person who donated, or simply “you matter” (if no specific message was requested). As the kids looked through the books, the very first thing they would do was look to see the name of the person who donated it. They all wanted to know who it was; they would ask how I knew them. It was so fun to be able to explain how I knew each person, or that I had no idea who some of the people were. It gave each of the books a story, it personalized the gift; it made it feel more meaningful to the students.
It. Was. So. Fun.
This project has provided so many opportunities for meaningful conversations. I had mentioned at one point that some individuals donated over ten books. A student said, under his breath, “Pfff, rich people.”
I literally stopped the entire class right then and there, and addressed the comment that was made. I talked about how though there were some individuals who might be more well off than others, there were many people who gave even though they were not “rich people.” Leaving out names, I told of someone who had recently moved across the country, didn’t have an apartment yet, was still looking for a job, and still decided to give. I told of a former Onalaska graduate who is a college student, and chose to give five books. College students aren’t known for being “rich people.” I told of the people who gave even though I didn’t even know who they were. Teachers from other schools, friends, family, children, who gave. I explained that just because someone is well off, it doesn’t make their donation less valuable. Every person who donated made the choice to donate. They could have spent that money on literally anything else. They didn’t have to choose to give; but they did. I asked if the books were less meaningful just because someone might be better off than they are. The attitude of the student changed drastically, as did the quality of the thank you letter he wrote.
This project has led to conversations of how to be respectful and take care of things, when a I caught a student eating junior mints directly off the pages of a book.
It has led to me getting to know the students better, as I hear what they love or hate about a story.
It has led to me being able to tell kids over, and over, and over, that they matter. And really, I couldn’t ask for anything more exciting than that.
And from the very bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for believing in kids. They need that. They need it more than any of us can really understand. You’ve truly given a gift that is more meaningful and impactful than you could possible know.
The foundation for my classroom was built by you. Every time I look at that shelf, I will see the love, the kindness, the faith you have, the hope you’ve given, and the willingness you all have to say that these kids matter.
I promise that I will remind them, every single student who ever enters my classroom, that they matter.
That they are believed in.
You’d be amazed how many of them have never heard that before.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this.
You are all such a blessing.
Now, from the kids.
These are in no particular order, and I made no corrections to spelling or grammar. These are straight from the kids. I hope you enjoy reading them.
thank you for giving me the opportunity to make a difference in my life. I didn’t have a lot of books growing up so in school I never really got into book and didn’t read a lot. I was reading at least two levels below grade level and now I am reading a grade above my level. Thank you for this amazing opportunity thank you for showing me that in this big world that I do matter. This is a life changer for me my friends and other classmates.
Thank You- Alex
Dear book donor,
As a student of Mrs. Hutsons english class, I would like to thank you for donating books to our classroom. All of the students appreciate it very much because sometimes there are no books in a classroom to use when we need books to read. The books help us by being there for us to read and use. It was very generous that you would spend your time and money for some kids you don’t even know when you could’ve spent it on yourself. Thank you so much.
a student of the Onalaska High School Dist
Hello from Onalaska. My name is Dhaymion, yeah i know weird spelling, I’m 6’5” and a junior. Thankyou so much for the books. I’ve always liked reading. The fact that a random stranger would send books to some kids from the sticks means a lot. It shows that we are more than just some average farming kids. You have helped us in multiple ways more than you know. You not only spent money on something that most would seem dumb or a waste of time; you invested into us not only in money but in caring enough. Thank You from Onalaska.
i would like to thank you for donating the book “ We are okay”. I just started reading it and i already love it. Thank you for giving us money you could have been spending on useful stuff for yourself. Thank you for showing my class and I that we truly matter. I honestly love having new books in the class. Opening a new book that was specifically for my class and I feels amazing!!! Im not a big book reader but I love reading the book you purchased. We have a class library and we read for 10 minutes per day, at the very beginning of class, forcing people to break out of their comfort zone, pushing us to open a book and read. Freshman year (2 years ago) i had finished my first book ever, thanks to an amazing english teacher that taught me how to choose a book that i would like. She helped me understand the book and learn to put myself in the character’s position. I had never thought i would love ready but now i truly enjoy it. Thank you for giving others like a me a chance to read books they love also.
Junior at onalaska high school.
To whomever has donated the book “Carry On”,
This letter is coming to you from a very grateful teenager, know simply as Finn, who is in love with SnowBaz. Just last year my friend bought and lent me Carry On, in a haze of fanboying, love of magic and shipping. I managed to finish the book in one night. When I entered my junior year and my English classroom my good friend pointed out the book to me with the fact that it was on the shelf, and I was SO utterly happy to see it there! The school I currently attend needs a little more “culture” in that area, so to speak, and if you’ve read the book yourself(which I’m sure you have) you’ll know what I mean. I’m so glad to see it in a classroom where many unsuspecting students can grab the book and be, surely shocked, by what lies in chapters 61, 57. I honestly never thought I could enjoy a book as much as I enjoyed Carry On. If you don’t, however, know what lies in the pages of that wizard book, I’d suggest highly that you do read it. I would also like to go on to say thank you for the fact that you even donated a book at all, it means a lot to me personally, as I do enjoy reading quite a lot. Not very many people in my class enjoy reading like I do, nonetheless the type of books I do, so it’s also nice to know that someone out there is thinking not just about the fact that people should read books, but also to know that someone is kind enough to consider that type of book that people like me would enjoy(and I don’t just mean the part about magic).
In short, thank you so, so much for donating such an amazing book, and just a book in general,
A very grateful teenager.
Dear Person who donated a book (or more than one),
I want to thank you. I’m a fifteen year old girl in the 11th grade and I love reading. I am an exchange student from Germany and on my first day, our teacher told us about all the great books. I am very impressed by the kindness, and I think it is a great way to help students. Reading is such an important part of life, it is joy, pleasure and education. It helps us growing up. Those books help me personally to improve my english and learning a lot of new words. So I just want to thank you very much for all of the wonderful books which were donated, for us. Donating a book to our high school is not just giving a book, it is a very nice gesture to show a lot of students that we are worth it. Sometimes we forget that a lot of people believe in us and you reminded us of that. I am thankful you believe in us and want to give us what we deserve: a good education.
Dear lovely person that has donated Carry On!,
I was so excited to see this book in my classroom! Carry on is one of my favorite books. I own a copic for myself, i was going through some really hard times when my sister had took me up to a local bookstore, I had picked the book out myself not knowing what treasures awaited me on the pages of this book. I do not know if you have read the book for yourself, but if you haven’t read it I definitely recommend it! I live in a not so supportive household, i’m a 17 year old transgender male who also is pansexual, when i had gotten this book for myself is when i had came out to my parents being open to them about it. It was really hard, my parents were not happy about it, Carry on is a great story though, a young wizard, his amazingly evil roommate, his best friend, and an amazing love story in the end. It has everything a reader would love, romance, mystery, a little drama, and a how lot of magic.
If you do get around to reading it i hope you enjoy it as much as i have and i am ever so grateful that you have bought this book for us and i hope it makes the next reader just as warm as i was on the inside!
Thank you so very much
Thank You for donating books for our class. It is greatly appreciated, and showing that you care about our education. Showing that you care is very important to us students because it gives us more hope. Gives us this feeling that our education is important to others. That there are people who care about our futures and us succeeding. I love to read, and hopefully get the chance to read some of the book that you donated. Over the past year, I have accumulated about 15 books. And I myself have donated those books to my english teacher here at Onalaska. I enjoyed the books I purchased, so I want others to enjoy them as well
Hello my name is Tanner, I am 16 and I wanted to write to you to explain how thankful I am for the books that have been donated to us. You have no idea how much this means to our class, getting these books saves us money and helps us learn and become better readers. The donation of the books has shown me that people do care about our education and our school and for that I thank you. When we got all these books it was a shock because we have so many books we can read and we have so many options to choose from. When I was younger I did not enjoy reading but now as I get older I have grown to like reading and I am now reading a book that was donated. Reading is now a thing I can do to free my mind and separate myself from the real world. Now that we have all these books it has opened up my options and now I dont have limited reading options. Donating the books was a huge thing for us and me and all my classmates appreciate it because we all have good books to read. Now that these books have been donated I have more romance books to read, as of right now I am reading The Fault In Our Stars. Thank You for the books that you have donated, I truly appreciate your donation.
Hello my name is Cody and i am one of Ms. Hutson class that you donated books too. I just want to say that I am very thankful for the thought of doing this and knowing we matter in this world. Since you did this for us i wanted to tell you about me. I am 16 and go to Onalaska and i am a junior that plays two sports basketball and baseball. I use to read all the time i don’t as much now due to sports. I am reading the Harry Potter series right now. You showing this gratitude is inspiring in a lot of ways and glad you have done it for us students. I am more into action and mystery book series because I am into things like horror movie and action packed movies. My favorite book is Orbiting Jupiter. The story behind is was great and recommend if you have not read the book before if you have any spare time i don’t know one person who has not said anything bad about the book. The fact all of you doing this brings joy and happiness to me and i just want to say thank you for believing and supporting us THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear Kaeden and his family

Dear Book donor(s)
I would like to thank you for donating to our class it was most generous of you to donate so many books. I know thanks to my teacher that some of you went out of your way to donate these books and that makes it mean even more to us. The Hunger Games trilogy was donated and that excited me because the movies and books are some of my favorite to watch and read. The Dumplin also sounds like an intriguing so I will give it a read. The girl in the blue coat also sounds like a good book. Outrun the moon also sounds and looks pretty cool so I will definitely read that. Oh and the Divergent books are really good and thanks to all of you I can finally read the third book. There are also many other books that were sent that I would love to list but then the rest of this letter would be filled with book titles. I will apologize though because you showed such a generous act of kindness there are a few who will take it for granted. But don’t worry the vast majority of us here will appreciate your kind gift.
To whom had donated the books to the Onalaska English Class,
I’m writing this letter to say thank you. You took the time out of a possible busy schedule to donate the book(s) to us, it’s greatly appreciated. These books will get their use, a lot. We have a lot of book worms at Onalaska High School. Thank you for thinking at we matter, because in reality we do matter. For most people, school is hard and books help them escape and exhale stress, they do for me. I go into a new world, to escape another, at time in a book, i see me as one or the main character. Anyway, thank you so much the donation you made to Mrs. Hutson. She seems to be really happy about it. I feel like have said thank you to much but i’ll say it one more time before I wrap this little letter up, Thank you.
Lots of love,
To whomever donated a book to Onalaska High School
Thank you for not only taking the time to buy this book but also thank you for using your own money to get a book for this school it is greatly appreciated by all the students at OHS. I am the kind of person who can only get into a book if i really like it, you donated some of the books that i really like and can get into, you also donated books that i haven’t read and that i will soon be able to read thanks to you. I am 15 and I have always liked books, i feel like books are like an escape for some people, when you really get into a book you can just block everyone and everything out, that is something i love about a good book you can just block everything out and lose track of time. I love books about history and i love books that have lessons in life. So again thank you for donating these books that many students will love and we all are grateful for your act of kindness.
To whom this may concern,
Thank you for donating over 100 books to Onalaska High School. With everyone’s donations we now are able to have a library in our English classroom. During the school we have a 50-Book Reading Challenge. Whoever wins the challenge, at the end of the year gets a prize or a trip. At the beginning of class our teacher has us read for 10 minutes, with your donations you gave us way more options. I’m currently a Junior at Onalaska High and the donations really mean alot to all of us here. Thank you for believing in us and believing that we deserve these books to better ourselves in life and maybe even find something we are passionate about. Again we really are thankful for all the books donated. Huge shoutout to the great person who donated “From Where I Watch You”, it’s a great book!

As a 17 year old pansexual male ( okay a transgender male ), i can’t tell you how much i can relate to simon. It was really hard to come out at first my parents weren’t very accepting so i fully understand simon and not wanting to come out ,ha ha. Anways i am so grateful to have this book in my hands its hard for me to find books such as this one! And as far as i can tell im going to love it more then what i already do. Im extra grateful that you took your time and money to buy this book for kids like me and more. I dont think you know how thankful i really am but still i want you personally to know that I personally am so thankful and so grateful. Books cost a lot i know they do i own a bit for my self and i know that if I want to buy more books i really need to set down a bit of money.

Well i got to go but thank you so much for sending all the books.
Dear Jason P.,
I cannot find words to describe how much I am so grateful to you dear person for sending some new and awesome books to us. The book that I am currently reading right now is called ¨Camp So-And-So” and even though I am on the second chapter, I could already tell how good this book is going to turn out. I have yet to read the other books(if you sent more) that you and many others have sent to us High Schoolers who are in desperate need for more books to read. And so I thank you once again for your willingness to send more adventures yet to be discovered by yours truly and your other thankful readers. The book ¨Camp So-And-So” is a very strange and thrilling story that leads girls into the unknowns of camp. A book I know I´m going to enjoy. I hope you send more books to us in the future. I could tell you have some interesting tastes in books. I hope that one day I can meet you in person. It would be interesting to hear about your knowledge and taste on books. Thanks again for sending books!
Dear Awesome Human,
I just wanted to say thank you for the wonderful books to have sent to us here at onalaska high school. This is my first year here as a sophomore and i absolutely love reading. Coming here and being able to read good books makes me feel alot better about the move. Sometimes life gets ruff and i need an escape, reading helps me alot with that. It makes me feel amazing that people like you believe in us students. You have my life a whole let better believe it or not. You didn’t have to send the books yet you did and that’s fantastic. I may not know you but i know that you are a kind person. I tend to relate to a lot of books ,many for different reasons but they make me feel like i belong here. Thank you for making me feel welcome.
Dear Book Sender
Thank you guys so for sending us these book’s. You have no idea how awesome this is to see people care about other people, shows good gratitude. I am currently reading The Amazing Mature And His Educated Rodents, it’s a pretty cool book stating the fact that the rats talk and steal gold. Now i’m not much of a book reader but this book is interesting but is good at the same time. We are all looking forward to hear from you guys again and to get more books!!. My favourite books are war books because i’m kinda related to the navy and would love to read some. When i was little books really aren’t for me but since i’m older i’m starting to like them, So hope to get more soon. Now i know i’m talking a lot about getting more books it’s because i’m not that great with words!.
Thank you very much. I was really surprised than so many people were willing to send 160 books. When my teacher told me that she ask for a donation of books I was expecting less than fifty not over 100 books. I have very recently regained my love for reading and I wanted to thank you for giving the materials needed to continue my love for reading. I am really excited to read as many as the books that were sent as I can. I am now a student with what seems like an infinite supply of books and it is all because of your generosity. I am deeply honored that people care so much about our education. I hope your life is or will go as joyful as you have made mine and my fellow students. Each book I read from class and all the knowledge I gain is because of your generosity. I will use the knowledge that you have given me to help me and others around me. You have help increase my love for knowledge. I will be forever grateful for your generosity.
Dear People who donated,
Thank you , thank you very much for buying the entire english class books i meas a lot to many of us. Some of us don’t have the chance to sit here and get good books to read all the time. By you guys donating books to us makes us very happy. I can sit in class and read the book and now that we can check out books from our teacher . We can take our books home from our mini classroom library and read . Thank you for making some us able to read all the time . And a personal thank you from me I love reading it’s one of the things i will normally do in my spare time. It helps me calm my nerves almost completely.
I really appreciate the book/books you donated. I usually don’t read very much but the book you donated is very interesting. It has expanded my view in reading and has made it more interesting. I hope you donate more to change more young lives. Again thank you. And continue to be a good person and change more lives.
Hey there you! I have to speak to you with the greatest appreciation! The only way I can do this if you are glad like we are. Thank you wonderful person(s) for giving new experiences and new books to the children (which are us). I am not the only one either. Get ready for inbox spam for probably the next day or two of these thank you letter. I am not special. You are.
Dear book donators,
First of all thank you for spending your own money and time to donate books to our classroom. I for one am a very avid reader and am very happy and thankful that I have the chance to read more books. I am especially thankful for the book Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. This is a book that is part of a series and in my personal library I only have to second volume. So a special thank you to Catherine Brassey for that particular book. There are many other books on the shelf that look so interesting and I have made it my goal to read all the books that I have not previously read. So I can almost guarantee that your money has not been wasted on a book that will sit on a shelf and never be read. Once again thank you so very much for donating so many books to our classroom.
Hannah and the rest of my classmates.
Dear donator, Thank you for taking the time to donate books to our classroom and giving us the opportunity to get new books. My name is Payton and I am a freshman from Onalaska High school. I spend a lot of my time reading because it’s something I really enjoy. Our school really appreciates that you took the time to donate books because it made us feel like me matter. So thank you so much.
Dear Generous People,
Thank you for your donation of books to our class library! Our library is now full thanks to your kindness. I’ve seen my classmates, these past few days, read more than I have seen some of them read ever. I love the book I’m reading and I hope to love all of the others too. Due to your kindness not only my class but also those that come after me will have access to the different worlds that they open up. Your donation has assisted the learning of many students and more to come. I hope that someday soon you can receive the same level of kindness.
Abby a Thankful Student

Because of you ill be able to read for hours. And for that i thank you.
Dear, people that got our class books,
Hello, my name is Gavin, I go to OHS and im sending this from my english class. I would like to personally thank anyone who got my class books. We are very thankful for that kind gesture, my classmates and i now have more options for reading books. Honestly, I didn’t like many of the books at the library. I have found that the only book I can actually read is a war story. As of now i am reading the book, “Kill Everything That Moves”, Quite a hostile name for a book don’t you think? Anyway, it is a really interesting book that I am grateful for.

Dear Book Donors
I want to thank you for donating the books to our school, as much as I want to read some of the books, i’m not much of a reader. The reason why I appreciate the donation is because that there are others that enjoy books. Like I said i’m not much of a reader, but that doesn’t mean i’m not going to read one or two of them. Thank you for your donation of books, and I do look forward to reading one if i’m lucky.

You are the inspiration to make people care about all humans in
Dear: The people that bought books for the kids at onalaska high school
Thank you for purchasing books for the students at Onalaska High School. It means a lot that you would spend your money for kids you don’t even know. You showed kids that they mean something and people will help them even if they don’t know them personally. It truly means something that people would buy books for kids even if they need things themselves and might not have the money to buy for themselves. So thank you again for helping kids that you may not know and for believing in kids.
Dear book doner,
thank you for the book you donated and i thank you for saying that we matter and i apreciate it because i love to read and thank you again for being kind

Dear book donor,
Thank you so much for donating books to us. I absolutely love reading and now, because of you, I have more books to read in E.L.A. I appreciate what you guys did for our class so much. Having a variety of books to read for english class is like a dream come true for me. I can’t wait to explore all the new books that were donated. Reading is what I do to get away, so for you to buy me and my class books with your own money that you could have spent on something that you wanted, is amazing! Again thank you.
From Vandee, 9th grader at Onalaska High School
I would like to thank you for the books you bought and sent to the onalaska high school. I honestly do not love to read but I am very thankful for the new opportunity to learn to love reading. I have already found a book that I am enjoying and hope I will find more. I think it is so fantastic that you have such a caring and willing heart. I will forever be thankful for you and everyone else who bought and gave books.
Thank you for donating the book me and my fellow classmates really appreciate all of the books you sent. Not only did you get us books but you are giving us more knowledge. With the books you sent i will be able to read more. Once again i would like to thank you for sending the books.
Thank you soo much for giving us the book or books you donated to Onalaska High School. I’m a student in Mrs. Hutson’s english class and we are all very thankful and we really appreciate it the books. It’s very important that us kids know that people out there care about us and want us to be successful in class. I know you had money to buy the books but you also could have used that money on something to help yourself in your life. Thank you so much for the books.
A student at the onalaska school district
Thank you so much for all the books you donated to our class. Our class loves to read and it really means a lot. Now if I don’t have a book to read I will always be able to grab a book. Thank you for spending your money on kids you don’t know.
Dear Book Donor,

I am very thankful for what you did for my class and I. Also believe me when I say this, they will all be read and treated well. Again thank you so much for getting us these books. VEry, very thankful.

Dear book donors,
My name is Bailey. I wanted to say thank you very much for donating all 101 plus books to Mrs. Hutson’s class. It means alot to the students here. You put time, money, and thought into giving these books to us. I appreciate it because you all showed us that we matter and that our learning and reading is important. You helped us realize how much we genuinely mean. I enjoy reading a lot because it takes me to many imaginary and new places. Now that our classroom has plenty of books I have plenty of opportunities to do that throughout the year.
Thank you again (:
Thank you for donating a book to my class i really appreciate it. My class gets a bigger selection of books to read in class and out. I’m excited to read the book you donated. Thank you so much you are such a kind person. Once again thank you for donating a book to my english class.
To whom it may concern:
First off i want to say thank you. Me and my class really appreciate the kind jester. I know for some off of the people donating to our class library it was a difficult donation because of money issues. We now have very interesting books to read. I will probably never meet you and you will probably never meet me but you will always have a part of you in our classroom.
Thank you so much,
Dear book donors, Thank you very much for the books. I really appreciate the books all of you donated. It means alot to the entire class. You really showed us that we matter. Reading has always been one of my favorite things to do and you made my access to good books easier. I have already started one of the books that you guys donated and i love it.
Thank you 🙂
Dear Thoughtful Donator,
I greatly appreciate your generous donation of books. I have come to understand that these books have not been donated by overly wealthy people. I am writing you to express my gratitude. You will never know the impact that these books will have on the lives of many students. You could be the reason that a student actually looks forward to coming to school because they know that they will be able to escape from the worries of the real world and get lost in a good book. The book I am currently reading is called “Hyperbole and a half.” It is almost like a comic book. I also appreciate its ability to talk about actual problems while also maintaining a sense of humor. It talks about a girl (or guy. I’m pretty sure its a girl though) and her journey through life and growing up in general. I actually look forward to english class because I can read a book I actually enjoy and get a grade for it. Thank you very much for your generous donation to our classroom library.
Thank you for whomever donated the books to our class. We appreciate the donation and sacrifices you made for us to read. I personally don’t like to read but there is some actual books that i’d like to read. There is actually a choice for everyone to read whatever book they like. Your books that you donated are being put to good use. Everybody has a book and is interested in what they’re are reading. I picked out the book “learning to swear in America” so far i really like it. I mostly liked the title haha.
So i’m taking the time to write this letter because you took the time and purchased my class books knowing you did not have to, so i’m here to just say thank you, thanks so much for what you have done i really appreciate it and i hope you appreciate my thanks to a wonderful thing you have done .
Dear Mystery book doner,
I want to thank you very much for the book you have donated to Mrs.Hudson’s class. I have a hard time reading books that don’t lose my interest in them by the third chapter. The book you donated has captured me, this is one of the very few books that i feel are wonderful. I have to read a lot being in this english class and find it hard to get a book i care about reading, this book has done that for me and made it easy to get my class work done. By you donating this book I have an actual chance of getting my work done and getting full credit. I would like to thank you for that opportunity. The Call has gave me a good chance to pass a class that i struggle in. I would like you to know that i am very thankful of your donation. This was a great addition to our book library with the few books that we have. Thank you so much for donating the books i really appreciate it.
Dear book sender,
Thank you so very much for the books that you have sent to us. Not only will it help all of us and future classes in the long run, but it will help us out now as well. I’m gonna be honest, when I was younger, I was never really into books and reading. But recently I’ve been starting to read a lot more. I used to take reading kind of as a joke and I would always just read because I had to in class. I’m starting to change now and my recent high school years I’ve been starting to read a lot more, and I’m actually starting to enjoy it now. I’m pretty sure I will get good use out of some of the many books that we’ve received from you gracious book senders. I would consider myself as a beginner in book reading, but the books i read aren’t much for begginers. I have recently been reading strong romance books. And i enjoy the way some of them are put together. I also like action books. But for now i’m hooked on romance. Thank you so much again for these books. This will help out, not only me but many others as well in the reading world. Thank you.
Dear generous book donator,
I would like you to know that I am very thankful for your book donation. The reason I am so thankful for your contribution is because I have a huge family, I am 1/18 and so all of our money is split between all of us therefore books are never a big priority for us to buy. Having books donated to our class helps me open up my genre interests because I have many to choose from. I am a big English lover, it is my favorite subject. I am going to be going to college to be an English major. Having all of these books to choose from helps me open up my vocabulary. I haven’t had the most fortunate life and most days I wish I could take a break from my life. When I have books to read I can put myself in their position and look at their lives through their eyes. You helped me open up my genre options and you also helped me find more books to help me forget about my life for a while. Therefore, I am very thankful for your generous contribution. I hope you have a great day and I hope that you will also get a chance to read a book and forget about your life for a while.
Dear the generous book giver,
I thank you for the book/books that you have donated to this classroom. Mrs.hutson has a huge library in her classroom thanks to a bunch of donations, all of us kids thank each and everyone who donated all these books. Ive honestly started to want to read, and before I hated reading, thanks to Mrs.hutson and Ms.otto I always want to read. I’m currently reading “boy 21” which is a great book and I’m only on the first couple chapters. I like a lot of sports books, I like seeing what other people go threw and what they do to make it better or get thru it. Over this last summer I read one of the best books that I’ve ever read. It was about these two kids that got in trouble and they needed to get threw it together, so they could go play sports and try to win another state championship. I think that there are a lot of good books that I just haven’t read yet, and i have all intentions of reading more and more. I really do thank all of the people that have donated these books because you guys believe we matter. Reading is important all over the world, and without people like you guys make reading possible for everyone. I love how there are such generous people out there that care, so thank you.
Dear the Giver,
As one of the receiver of the book(s) you donated I would personally like to thank you. Books are very important to many students they can affect a student’s whole life. If a book can relate to the student then it could be something that sticks with them for years. Certain characters or stories can help people get through hard times. The books will also help students with test scores and their memory. I personally love reading not just because it gives you an escape from the real world but that it gives you a look into other worlds and peoples lifes. My favorite book series is The Mortal Instruments, I’ve read all of the books in that series. But I have read many other series such as The Secrets of The Immortal Nicholas Flamel, The Dark Artifices, Divergent and Magisterium. Now because of you I have new opportunities to get into even more series. I am looking forward to reading many of the donated books. Thank you again for donating and helping us grow our own library.
To whom this may concern,
The donations that you so gratefully gave to Bethany Hutson English ll are a great help to Onalaska and the students attending. We do not have the a lot of books, a lot of kids like to read but have already read the books that have been in our school system for many of years. The great vast of books that have been received will help us 10 fold. The book that i’m currently reading is called ‘The Things They Carried’ by Tim O’Brien. The Things They Carried is a great book, it gets to me deeply because many of my family members have been in the grasp of war and served to fight for our country. It tells the story of what they experienced and what they had to go through to survive. Many of the stories tell about their losses, they are dark and personal, they speak of the truth of what war is. Well, to get on with the point, We do greatly appreciate the donations that you gave us.
Sincerely- The Unknown
Dear whom this may concern,
I am a Junior at Onalaska High School and in Mrs. Hutsons 5th period English class. Since the first day of school she has told us about how she set a goal to begin a classroom library and her project to get many books. It means a lot to not only her but to her many English students including me. Personally, I am not a huge book reader and it takes me awhile to get interested in a book. But looking at all the new books that i have not heard of before, gets me interested in getting out of my comfort zone and exploring the new classroom library. Everyday, the first ten minutes of class are designated to reading. Your donations have given us more options to choose from. Many students in my class are reading the new books that were donated from not only you but a lot of other people. Thank you so much for showing us that we matter and even something as little as a book can make a huge difference and impact people in many ways. We are very grateful for people like you!
Dear, Book Giver
Thank you for the book donation(s). Hi i’m Tristen Lawrence i’m from onalaska high school. I’m in the 11 grade and enjoy english. These books are gonna broaden my horizons and expand my imagination. These books are gonna help many students and their journey high school. This will help students advance in classes. Im reading “The Tie That Binds” and i just started it. I love this book so much. So thank you again for your generous donations to our education. So God bless and thank you again.
Dear, book doner
If it wasn’t for you i wouldn’t be reading a book that i like. Usually I am unable to find a book that i like. I usually perfer books based on a real stories or realistic books. I am reading hatchet and so far it has caught my attention. I’ve made it to page 15 and i already like it especially since it has so vivid descriptions. For example it describes all the gauges that Brian was seeing numbers on the gauges and describing the altimeter and how he read about them but he can’t remember anything. I do like the build up at first but i can’t wait to read the plane crash portion due to it probably being descriptive. I read more of the book today and Brain is unable to get help over the radio. He is contemplating on if he should or should not keep flying or kill the engines now. He realizes that he will have to crash land the plane because he doesn’t know how to fly.
Dear mystery book doner,
I am a student from Mrs. Hutsons English 11 class. Thank you so much for the donation of a book(s). I am very excited to read them all and I am also thankful you took the time out of your day and bought a book or books for all of us to read. I have already started reading The way I used to be and it is so good so far. It is about a girl that struggles after getting raped in high school and she does not tell anyone till her senior year, and she gets into a lot of things people should never do like drugs and stuff. I really enjoy reading it on my free time and I hope to read all them by the end of the year. I now have a chance to get full credit on a future assignment we do because of your donation. It means a lot that you cared enough to help us out. I hope everyone is as happy as I am about the donation because books are amazing. I am thankful for the opportunity to read more books this year, and that everyone should enjoy reading books.
Dear, Book giver
thank you so much for the book(s) i really appriciate it. The kids here in Onalaska really like them. All of the books are pretty amazing and a very wide variety of genres. One of the new books im reading right now is Looking for Alaska by John Green, its my favorite book and the second time reading it. Everyday in the beggining of class everyone in the class has to read for 10 minutes, its actually pretty fun. Thank you very much for taking the time and money to get us books im very glad you were able to do that for us! Everyone here is very appriciative about all the support we are getting here in onalaska. One time i read a quote that was pretty touching an it said “a library is a hospital for the mind” i guess tome that was pretty cool.
Dear mysterious book doner,
I want to thank you for donating a book or books! It means so much to me because it actually lets me know that someone cares about me, my education, and my peers as well. You wouldn’t think most people would care because we’re just high school kids. But really, we are the future! We are the future adults who will become doctors, dentists, lawyers, book writers, waitresses, retailers, and even teachers. I want to give a huge thankyou to you for believing in my education and future. So far I’ve read one book out of our “donated library” called, “The sun is also a star” donated by Riley B. It’s probably been one of the best books I’ve read for a long time and i’m a bookworm. Many kids don’t read a lot, but by donating a book or books it lets kids get the chance to read! Especially now that we have ten minutes of in class reading at the beginning of class. So that way it makes kids that love to read or hate to read, read! SO THANKYOU
Junior in Mrs.Hutson’s 5th period class,
Dear book donors,
I greatly appreciate your donations! The books look great and i am currently enjoying The League of Seven and it seems like a beautiful story so far. I am glad you lighten your pockets for our sake and i will continue to be grateful as long as i have access to the library. The library looks amazing so many of the books look like a wonderful piece to read. I will read as many that interest me and will be grateful for each. I personally love reading but don’t own many books myself so i love the opportunity you provided. The opportunity will not be wasted. I can’t wait to read thank you!!
Dear the Giver (budum tss)
Thank you for the new classroom library. Did you know that just reading ten minutes a day can increase test scores and memory. I personally love reading and to get new books for the classroom was awesome!! The reason I love reading so much is because it lets me escape the real world and enter a completely different world. Now that we have our own personal library I am able to access an entire assortment of worlds to explore. I’m currently reading Undertow by Buckley, it’s a Sci-fi book about an alien race known as the Alpha. The Alpha emerge from the sea, they begin to occupy Coney Island. So far I am loving the story line. I can’t wait to see how the story ends. Once again thank you for giving me the opportunity to escape from the stresses of life. Thank you for our very own library, I plan on reading many of the books!!!
Dear mysterious human who donated this book,
I’m writing this letter to you because i’m am very appreciative of the book/book’s you have donated to our school. We don’t have a wide variety of books at our school that interest us as students and your book has given us another book to add to the ones we do have. I’m currently reading one of the books that one of you have donated to us,I’m reading Everything Everything by nicola yoon and it was donated by Shelly R. I’ve been watching to watch the movie so badly and so I’m going to read the book first and then I will watch the movie and see the difference between the two. But I appreciate everyone who donated a book I am going to try to read as many as I can. When we start on a new book most of us don’t go to the library we go to the library in the classroom and since she is a new teacher we didn’t have a much too read so every book donated is a book that a student can read and actually be interested in it and want to finish. I’ve only read book that interest me and i have a hard time reading books that the teacher assigns because i don’t usually have an interest in them. I’ve read through a lot of the books summaries and a lot of them are the kind of books that interest me. When everyone seen all the books everyone pretty much ran up to the library and wanted to find a good book before someone else got it i had to fight for my book, and i love it. But anyways in conclusion thank you so much to all of the people who donated books i really appreciate it!
Dear, book doner
I personally wanted to thank you for the book hatch you donated to my school. Usually I would not read a book because I do not like to read unless the book really interested me. A Lot of the books at my school are old or just don’t interest me. I like how the book explains how he got out in the woods. The book has a good climax of how the pilot’s heart attack starts. When the pilot had the heart attack it made the story more intense. The story is very descriptive of how panicked brian got and how he has to try to fly the plane as good as he can. When brian had to try to figure out the gauges and radio. So far the book you donated has been good. So basically I wanted to thank you for donating a book.
To whom it may concern
Thank you for the book/books you sent to us. I don’t like to read very much but with big selection we have now it makes it easier to find a book to read. Before we got new books i did not expect to have any books that i would enjoy. I´m reading American Sniper, I watched the movie and I really liked it. But now that I have started reading this book. I see that the movie left out a lot of details. Normally I would rather watch the movie but i’m glad that i’m reading the book. My favorite part so far is when Chris Kyle said that his sniper rifle was his chiefs that he gave to him. Thanks again for all the books again. I hope you enjoy all the letters that all of us wrote to you.
Sincerely Zian S.
My name is Cesar I am a person who doesn’t enjoy reading. But you donated some pretty interesting books. And i wanted to say thank you for donating I am currently reading The Maze Runner. It is also my favorite movies so far and I am looking forward to reading the book. And all the other ones i heard from my fellow classmates that there are many interesting ones such as orbiting jupiter. And i wanted to thank you for taking your time money ect… to donate a book. I have learned so many things from books. Such as words ideas and many other things. And again i think its very nice of all of you people to donate. And i will have very much pleasure reading thank you.
To all the donors of books I would like to thank you. For you have brought us a wider form of selection to explore and increase our knowledge. Me personally I don’t like to read but due to a book from a donor I have found the joy that my classmates share. I understand that you’re getting a lot of thank you emails and notes but in all seriousness we can’t thank you enough. There’s so much we could thank you for like thank you for caring, thank you for helping this little school, thank you for giving us a chance by donating. The list goes on and on but in all seriousness thank you so much I truly mean it. I’m writing this late and we just finished a test and as I look around everyone doesn’t seem bored they’re fascinated with their book that you made available. We all know not many people choose to read they have other stuff to do or they just don’t have the time but with us we have a moment to relax and read. Thank you for the opportunity we can’t thank you enough. It never would have been possible without you. From all of us at Onalaska High School we wish we could thank you in person to show more meaning.
Hello my name is jacob I am in the freshmen english class .Thank you for spending your time and money on getting us books there are plenty of books to read some books we know about and some we have no clue about. We get to read at least ten minutes during the beginning of class. This really helps students who don’t have any books at home. So I am extremely glad that you donated the fund for books.
Thank you for donating books to our classroom, I am sure that they will be used countless times in their lifetime. My name is Cole and i am in Mrs. Hutson´s freshman english class. Thank you for going on Facebook and donating the books. It was very exciting seeing all the new books you 40+ donors gave our class. We will use these books many, many times.
Cole, Mrs. Hutsons 2nd period class
Dear book donators,
Thank you for donating books to Mrs. Hutson’s class. Your generous actions helped tons of students have a chance to borrow a book that is fun, exciting, and interesting from her classroom. I have skimmed through the book selection and all the books sound SOO interesting and good. I’m excited to read one or maybe six of them! Again, thank you for your donation to her little mini library.
A student of hers, Kayla
I am very speechless when i found out that that all these books together costed over $1500. I’m very appreciated for you to take the time out of your day and care about us students who need these books. Usually i dont have the chance to read these kind of books but you gave us the opportunity to read these books and i’m very thankful for that. Im also sending you this letter to tell you that since you bought these books for us now our school or teacher doesn’t have to spend money on buying really expensive books. If I knew you and i saw you every day i was just give you a hug.
Whoever you may be, I find you absolutely generous, it is so amazing that you decided to donate a book or books to this class and the students here. It doesn’t matter how poor or rich you are you’re an amazing person for thinking about us. The teacher here actually told us she received more than she ever asked for which is crazy. Honestly I didn’t think so many could be so caring and I love that people can be that way still. I am a avid book reader and appreciate your donation greatly (I know I may seem a bit formal but to tell the truth, I’m not very good at writing letters in general). I hope that someone else is just as generous as you are and you receive or earn something spectacular. Books and writing are a big part of my life so I thank you for contributing to that. Thank You again generous book donner for giving us the books you sent to us.
Sincerely, A very appreciative student of OHS
Thank You Again!
Thank you so much for giving us all of those books. I am reading one of the books that one of you donated to our class . It’s the book by Leah Thomas it’s called Because you’ll Never Meet Me. I love this book so for I’m glad that you send this book and I’m really thankful.
Confused as to what this post is all about? Here is an explanation!
Post written in mid August:
If you don’t know already, I will be starting my first year as a high school English teacher in a few weeks. I am absolutely ECSTATIC for this new chapter in my life. I absolutely loved my student teaching (5 month full time teaching internship), and can’t wait to be in my own classroom.
Last week I picked up my keys to my classroom, and spent a few days getting set up.
My own classroom.
I’m. So. Excited.
As I spent time in my new room, I discovered a need, and I set a goal to meet that need.
This is what I posted on Facebook:
“I just set a new goal. I have spent the last few days getting my classroom ready for when school starts in a few weeks – this is the beginning of my classroom library! I am very fortunate to have a good foundation build up for my classroom library, thanks to the wonderful teacher who left behind so many books for me! All of my students will spend the first 10 minutes in my classroom reading whatever they want, every day. Research has shown time and time again the powerful impact reading has on academic achievement. If we can get books in kids’ hands, they will improve academically. I’ve seen the power of this firsthand. There is nothing quite as exciting as watching a student finish their first book. And yes, there are many, many high school students who have never read a book before. The key is to find books students are interested in. I’ve compiled an extensive list of Young Adult books from every genre, with the hope that if I have these books, no matter how picky a student is, I will be able to place an exciting and relevant book in their hand. These books will be an incredible resource to be able to offer to students!
My goal is to fill these shelves before school starts on August 29th! I limited my list to 101 books – help me run out of shelf space! If you are interested in donating a book to my classroom library, please take a moment to check out the list – items can be shipped directly to me (my shipping address should be provided as a shipping option, message me if it isn’t), or you can purchase them at Book N Brush in Chehalis and they will hold them there for me (you can just call them to order, or go check out their whole shelf dedicated to my wish list!).
For every book donated, I will write on the inside cover who donated it, and I will make sure you get a thank you note.
Every book donated will stay as a part of my classroom library and will be used until I retire and am able to pass them down to a new teacher.
Books are such a gift – thank you for investing in the education of future generations!
Feel free to share this post – let’s get books in students hands!
